Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of approach shafts providing entry to the site... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among thousands of British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our security, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "major assault" on IS targets in Syria, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
